Lykke Communities Awarded $5k Grant for Drop-In Youth Ukulele Classes

New Ulm, MN — Monday, September 23, 2024 – Lykke Communities is excited to announce the launch of a new, grant-funded youth ukulele class for area youth. This activity is made possible thanks to the generous support of the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Lessons begin on Saturday, September 28th, offering young musicians an opportunity to learn the basics of this popular instrument in a fun, supportive environment. Each week students will learn the chords and strumming patterns for a new song, building upon that knowledge throughout the classes.

Open to youth in grades 5-12, the weekly classes will be held at Ulm Sweet Ulm (203 N Minnesota St, New Ulm) every Saturday from 10:30-11:30am. No prior musical experience is required, and ukuleles will be provided to participants free of charge.

“We are thrilled to bring this exciting new program to our community,” said Brie Taralson, Board President of Lykke Communities. “The ukulele is a fantastic introduction to music, offering an accessible and enjoyable way for young people to develop their creativity and confidence. We’re grateful to Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council for helping us make this opportunity available to all youth, regardless of their background or financial circumstances.”

The Ukulele Class will be taught by music therapist, Anna de St Croix and local ukuleleist, Matt Mihlbauer. Over the course of the program, participants will learn basic chords, strumming patterns, and songs, culminating in an open mic-style performance to showcase their progress.

Registration is now open, and space is limited. Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up early to secure a spot. Register at this link. For questions or more information please contact Lykke Communities at [email protected].
