Lykke Communities Awarded $24k Grant for Youth Bike Maintenance Classes

New Ulm, MN – Wednesday, July 7, 2024

Lykke Communities, a local non-profit organization dedicated to fostering community engagement and sustainable living, is proud to announce that it has been awarded $24,476 from the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Boost Grant program. This generous Boost grant will fund youth bike maintenance classes in downtown New Ulm, aimed at empowering young people with essential skills and promoting active transportation.

The bike maintenance classes, set to begin this fall, will be held at Ulm Sweet Ulm (203 N Minnesota St) in downtown New Ulm. The program is a partnership with Big Ideas, Inc. who is providing instructional support for the classes. The course is designed for youth aged 12-18 and will cover a range of topics, including basic bike repairs, safety checks, and the importance of regular maintenance. Participants will learn how to fix flat tires, adjust brakes, and perform routine inspections to ensure their bikes are safe and rideable.

“We are thrilled to receive this support from the Minnesota Department of Transportation,” said Brie Taralson, Board President of Lykke Communities. “This grant will enable us to empower kids to maintain their own bikes, and to teach practical, hands-on technical skills that they will use throughout their lives.”

The Boost grant will fund the purchase of a community workshop, fully equipped with the tools, bikes, and equipment for kids to learn as well as fund an instructor stipend. The program will offer a series of weekly classes over the next year, including an introductory class for beginners, and a more in-depth course for youth interested learning more in-depth technical skills.

“Bikes are a gateway for kids to learn mechanic skills that can translate into small engines or other career paths,” said Joe Schotzko, Big Ideas trainer. “There is currently nothing like this offered in the community. We’re excited to bring it to life in New Ulm.”
